Visiting Starbase Louisiana
Before you drive down
There is nothing to see at the site yet. Starbase Louisiana was announced on August 25, 2026 and construction has not begun. No public viewing area, visitor center, or tour exists. If you come now, you are coming for the marsh, the food and the drive.
Getting there
Pecan Island sits on Louisiana Highway 82, the coastal route through southern Vermilion Parish. From Lafayette, take US-167 south to Abbeville, then LA-82 south and west, roughly two hours in total. Fuel and services are sparse south of Abbeville; fill up before you head down.
Airports
Lafayette Regional (LFT) is the closest commercial airport, about two hours by road. Lake Charles (LCH) and Baton Rouge (BTR) are longer drives, and New Orleans (MSY) is roughly four hours away.
Where to stay
There is essentially no hotel lodging at Pecan Island itself. Abbeville and Kaplan have limited options; Lafayette has the deepest supply of hotels and rentals. Camps and fishing lodges in the area book out in hunting season.
What you can see today
Nothing has been built. The area is coastal marsh, chenier ridge, rice and crawfish country, and working camps. There is no visitor center, no public viewing area, and no designated parking. Stay on public roads and respect private and leased land.
Practicalities
Cell coverage is spotty along LA-82. Mosquitoes are serious most of the year. Storm season runs June through November, and coastal roads flood, so check Louisiana 511 before driving down.
While you're in the parish
Abbeville is the county seat with a walkable downtown and a strong food scene. Vermilion Parish is also a strong birding corridor, and the Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge lies along the coast to the west.
