SpaceX announces $100 billion Starbase Louisiana on Pecan Island

SpaceX announced on August 25, 2026 that it will build a Starship launch and production facility on Pecan Island in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana. The company described the project as roughly a $100 billion investment and its fourth and largest launch site, designed to eventually support thousands of Starship launches per year.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry appeared alongside the announcement, framing the project as a major economic win for the state. Louisiana lawmakers had already passed several bills aimed at attracting aerospace investment ahead of the reveal.

The chosen site sits on low coastal marshland south of Abbeville and Kaplan, in a sparsely populated stretch of Vermilion Parish. Some area residents have already voiced concerns about the scale of the buildout and its effect on the surrounding wetlands.
