The Thursday Dispatch, Vol. 1: Louisiana wakes up next to a $100 billion spaceport

Good morning from the Vermilion Parish marsh. This is the first Thursday Dispatch, our weekly recap of everything happening with SpaceX Starbase Louisiana, written for people who live here and for people who plan to drive down and see it.

Where things stand

On August 25, 2026, SpaceX announced Starbase Louisiana alongside Governor Jeff Landry. The site is Pecan Island, a chenier ridge in southern Vermilion Parish reached mainly by Louisiana Highway 82. SpaceX has described the project as roughly a $100 billion investment and as its fourth and largest launch facility, intended to eventually support a very high Starship flight rate.

That is the whole confirmed record. Everything else circulating this week is projection, speculation, or somebody reading a map.

Still not announced

No construction start date. No first launch date. No environmental review schedule. No hiring numbers or job postings tied to the site. No public viewing area, visitor center, or designated road for spectators. Nothing has been built on the ridge.

If you see a countdown clock, a groundbreaking date, or a job board claiming to be official, treat it as unverified until it comes from SpaceX, the parish, or the state.

What we are watching

Three things will tell us more than any press release. First, federal environmental review filings, which are public and which set the real calendar for a coastal launch site. First, watch also for Vermilion Parish police jury agendas, where road, drainage, and permitting items surface long before national coverage. Second, state economic development announcements, which usually carry the incentive terms and the first credible employment figures. Third, land and right of way activity along Highway 82.

Local notes

Pecan Island is not a tourist stop today. There is no fuel, no lodging, and very little cell coverage once you are out on 82. Abbeville and Kaplan are the practical bases, and Lafayette Regional is the nearest commercial airport at roughly two hours by road. If you drive out to look, stay on public roads, do not block the shoulder, and remember that this is working marsh and working land.
